1. Mechanical Permits

Mechanical permits will be issued to MN Bonded mechanical contractors and homeowners completing their own mechanical work only. The applicant must be completing the work. 

Please review the mechanical permit types listed below and select the best fit for your project. For permits requiring plan review, include all required submittals to help avoid delays.

2. Residential New or Replacement Mechanical Equipment

Select this permit type for all replacement or new mechanical equipment.

• Air Conditioner, Air Exchanger, Boiler, Fireplace, Furnace, Gas Line, Hydronic Tubing, Unit Heater (Identify make/model details in ePermit Portal  description) 
• New gas lines – Provide code compliant location, installation, and type/size of piping. 
  • Appliance/Equipment manufacturers’ specifications shall be on site for inspections

Reminder: Increasing the energy use of a building by heating or cooling requires compliance with the MN Energy Code.

 

3. Residential Minor Mechanical Alterations/Repairs

Select Minor Alteration/Repair permit type for minor alteration of mechanical systems including basement finishes. Detailed scope of work shall be included in ePermit description.

Optional Submittals

• Plans or scope of work document uploaded into Additional Documents during the application process.
• Any specifications necessary to complete review shall be submitted. 
  • Appliance and/or equipment manufacturers’ specifications shall be on site for inspections.

4. Residential Existing Mechanical System Addition

Select this permit type for projects where a current system exists and a major addition will occur. 

Required Submittals

• Heat Loss, Combustion Air & make-up Air Calculations (PDF) -  Upload file name = Sub1 Mechanical Calcs
• Mechanical Plan – Upload file name = Sub1 Mechanical Plans. Detailed description of system information. Include code compliant details of location of install and type/size of gas piping

Additional Submittals

• Specifications - Any specifications necessary to complete plan review shall be submitted. Appliance and/or equipment manufacturers’ specifications shall be on site for inspections.

 

5. Residential New Mechanical System

Prior to applying for mechanical permit verify if mechanical permit was included in building permit. Typically all New Dwellings are issued all-inclusive permits. 

Select this permit type for projects where a new system is being installed i.e. detached structures, large additions where a second system is being installed.

Required Submittals

• Heat Loss, Combustion Air & make-up Air Calculations (PDF) - Upload file name = Sub1 Mechanical Calcs 
• Mechanical Plan – Upload file name = Sub1 Mechanical Plans. Detailed description of system information. Include code compliant details of location of install and type/size of gas piping.

• Specifications - Any specifications necessary to complete plan review shall be submitted. Appliance and/or equipment manufacturers’ specifications shall be on site for inspections.

 

6. Commercial Mechanical

Select this permit type for all Commercial Mechanical Permits. Plan review will begin after permit acceptance. Fees will be due after review approved.

Required Submittals:

• Township Approval Form (PDF) - Use form to determine if township approval is required for project location. Submit completed form with township approval signature if applicable.
• Contact & Contractor Form (PDF) -  Upload completed contact and contractor form as applicable
• Building/Mechanical Plans - Upload file name = Sub1 Mechanical Plans. Include all equipment details, heating and cooling load calculations, exhaust and ventilation, occupant load details when applicable.
• Specifications - Upload file name = Sub1 Specs. Equipment and material detailed specifications.
• HVAC Energy Compliance forms - Upload file name = Sub1 HVAC Compliance. Must be consistent with energy path chosen for entire project
