Marriage Licenses & Certificates
Obtain a Certified Marriage Certificate (Proof of Marriage)
**Know Before You Apply**
Marriage certificates are on file in Scott County only if the applicants applied for their marriage license in Scott County. If the application was made in another county, contact that county or use the Minnesota Official Marriage System website to obtain a marriage certificate.
Option 1: Apply via email
Send an email to customerservicevm@co.scott.mn.us that includes the following information:
- Full names of both applicants
- Applicant's name before marriage (if changed)
- Date of marriage
- Correct fees (see below)
- Your return address
Make sure your daytime contact information is provided in the body of the email. Applications without contact information cannot be processed.
Staff will call you at the time of processing to obtain credit/debit information. A 2.49% service fee is assessed on all credit/debit transactions. Your request will be processed and your certificate(s) will be mailed to the address provided in the email.
Option 2: Request by mail or drop box
Simply write a short note and include the following information (there is no application form needed):
- Full names of both applicants
- Applicant's name before marriage (if changed)
- Date of marriage
- Correct fees (see below)
- Your return address
Mail or drop off in our drop box with check made out to Scott County to:

Cost
The fee is $9 for each certified copy requested.
You can pay with cash, check (payable to Scott County) or credit card. If you pay with a credit card you will be paying a 2.45% convenience fee.
Marriage License Application Process
If you purchase a marriage license in Minnesota, you must get married in Minnesota. There is no waiting period for a license, it will be issued to you immediately. Your license is valid for six months.
- Completely fill out and print the Marriage Application (PDF).
- You can only apply in person at our Service Center.
Remember to Submit
- If you went through 12 hours of marriage counseling, bring the reduced fee Educator’s Statement Sample (PDF). Please note this a sample for your reference only.
- If one of the applicants cannot appear, print and complete this form, have it notarized, and bring with to the appointment: Supplemental Application Form (PDF)
Cost
- Regular Fee: $115
- Reduced Fee: $40 with reduced fee Educator's Statement (must be submitted at the time of application)

Additional Information
A marriage must be witnessed by two adults (16 or older). They are not required to be Minnesota Residents.
Before submitting, make sure all information is correct on your application. Once the marriage certificate is filed, no corrections can be made without a court order.
