Signal Work and Changeable Message Boards

The CH 83 (Canterbury Rd.) and TH 169 interchange serves as the primary access point for three large event destinations in and near the City of Shakopee. Canterbury Park Racetrack and the Valleyfair Amusement Park are located north of the interchange. Mystic Lake is located south of the interchange. Special events at these destinations frequently cause sharp increases in traffic that lead to substantial congestion and safety issues on TH 169 and CH 83, including queues on the interchange off-ramps that extend onto mainline TH 169.

There are other routes and access points to these destinations that are currently underutilized during special events. One of the underutilized routes with the most capacity is CH 101. Additionally, the CH 17 (Marschall Rd) and CH 21 (Herrgott Memorial Dr) interchanges could potentially serve as alternative routes for motorists on TH 169.

The objective of the project was to provide Scott County with a traffic management system that allows for real-time alternative route information to be posted in order to balance traffic in the project area during special events. This will help lead to reduced congestion and safety issues at the CH 83 and TH 169 interchange. The proposed ITS improvements would reduce congestion and improve air quality along these corridors.

Purpose & Justification

This project aims to make improvements that will reduce congestion and improve traffic operations.
